Palamos is a bustly shopping centre. There are no big name stores as most of the businessses are local but there is a great selection and prices are usually good and the perfume shops and jewellers offer some good deals. If you buy any gifts for friends back home tell the assistant "Es para regalo" and they will wrap it nicely at no extra charge. Clothes and shoes are a good buy. This is also a great place to stock up with wine and spirits even if they don't let you drink it on the boat. You can find a good wine at two or three Euros. a "reserva" for 4-5 Euros and "gran reserva" for about five to ten Euros. Catalunya is a big producer of Cava (champagne) with prices similar to the wine prices. Some information sites tell you that Palamos was the centre of the cork industry and you can find souvenirs of cork. This, frankly, is a load of rubbish. Cork is still quite an important industry and there is an excellent Cork Museum in nearby Palafrugell, but souvenirs are generally made in China or some other part of Spain. You will find English newspapers easily or if you grudge the inflated price there are daily copies at the local library. Market day is Tuesday and there are lots of bargains especially in clothes. The principal shopping streets are Carrer Major (Main Street), Carrer Cervantes and Avinguda 11 Septembre. The weekly market is in Avinguda Catalunya. |
